Recently, China Central Television (CCTV) broadcast Obama’s inaugural address. In Obama’s speech, he talked something about communism. When the translator had translated the sentence “earlier generations faced down fascism and communism”, she was immediately stopped. This is really an interesting news.
Let’s firstly look at the how CCTV acted about it. As a Chinese, I has been watching news on CCTV for more than 10 years. Almost every critic audience could find that all the time CCTV reporting news in a positive perspective when it comes to the nation, the party and the government’s ideology. In Chinese tradition, reasons and purpose of an action are very important. Good reasons and good purposes can raise great power among people. The Chinese Communism Party and the government applies the communism as the basis of the country, they have to convince all Chinese people that communism is good. In Obama’s situation, we can obviously find Obama is attacking communism, which is the most essential ideology that China has been endorsed. So such action, stopping the translator immediately, is to maintain the good image of the communism. If the image of the communism was ruined, people would lose the confidence in the government and the party, and inevitable it would lead to social unrest, or even the end of the government.
Also because of CCTV’s reporting “style” which lose credibility at some degrees, a large amount of audience still obtain these information from different kinds of source. Internet and other TV programs like Phoenix Television in Hong Kong are popular ways among Chinese people.
But I have to point out that Obama’s words on communism also lose its historical truth. In the World War II, the enemies we human faced were the fascism. Specifically, at that time, Japan Fascism was the enemy which Chinese and American had fight against together. If that time American both faced with Japanese Fascism and Chinese Communism, I think the world somehow would be totally different today. It’s true that during Cold War, United States and Soviet Union had hard competition among each other and finally US wined over the communism. But today, Obama gave speech, where he put fascism and communism together, to China, which we can almost say that the only communist country in the world, it is really aggressive offense. How would American people think if Chinese government giving speech about how foolish that those Christians believe in God which is not existing at all?
So, take care of the words when giving public speech, especially in such situation.

at the beginning
Before I came to America, I had been told that when I came here, I would start concern more about everything happened in my homeland. At the very beginning, somehow, I doubted about these words. But now I agree with it strongly. Maybe because I have more time than when I was in China, I can do more things I like. Or maybe in America, being surrounded by various kinds of different cultural, I tend to compare them with Chinese Cultural. Or just simply, my personal attachment to China becomes more obvious than ever since I left it. I started to concern about every aspects of China, which including its history, economic, society, cultural and etc.
One of my everyday routine is to go to some websites to update my knowledge. And I find that after doing that for more than half a year, my understanding about the whole world has increased a lot.
Last year, China had been through series big events: the earthquake in Sichuan Province, some ugly things happened during the Olympic Torch Relay, the great Olympic Games, the rebellion in Tibet and that toxic milk powder event. The generation today in China is the generation being torched, and the generation being education by all of those. I am pleasant that I saw that Chinese people got united together to undergoing every disaster. And now I believe that it’s just a matter of time that China will return to one of the greatest countries again.
However, deal to deal. I also realized that the tradition Chinese culture now is losing its influence. Young Chinese people care less about it. I feel the responsibility of it. Passing the culture from generation to generation is never an easy job. Here I need to, and have to do this job starting from myself, to understand it, to popularize it and bring it back to the world stage.
